MLK Holiday

One of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day events attended by Urban Financial Services Coalition nationwide was done by Walter Brown, Jr. DE #ufscmswc at the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County in Alamo California.

Some of the folks we met:

A- *ACTUAL MOREHOUSE CLASSMATE of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Emeritus of the American Medical Association- Dr. Lonnie Bristow

B- Senior Pastor Kim Risedorph San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church (event host)

C- Pastor Will McGarvey Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County

D- Dr. Julius X. Van Hook – Keynote Speaker

E- Jim Burk SRV Church Facilitator

Some of the information points we heard:

1- Dr. King was known as “Mikey” or ML in his youth.

2- As a PK “Preachers Kid” Dr. King did not want to become a minister (He first talked of being a MD then a Lawyer).

3- Dr. King continues holds the record as the youngest male to earn the Nobel Prize at age 35.

4- Dr. King was assassinated at age 39. An examining doctor said his body had the heart of a 60 year old due to stress.

5- Dr. King was unpopular and opposed by many famous Clergymen. They said he was an unruly agitator, he did not know his place and was using the wrong methods to pursue justice. Dr. King’s famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” was a direct reply to one such public attack on his work.

6- Dr. King holds the unique position of being a global icon, few if any leaders are as recognizable around the planet as Dr. King is due to, among other things, the success of his work.
